Merry Christmas, did you get your shopping done yet?
What's the difference between a donut and sufganiyot? About 6$ each!
I just made a last-minute pilgrimage to the kosher market in Boca to pick up latkes and sufganiyot for the family celebration I have later tonight. I was cursed standing in a very long line, and a nice older lady heard my friend and I talking about how the candles keep falling out of our menorah.
Her suggestion: “Heat the bottom of the candle with a lighter and then put it into the holder. The melted wax will hold it up.” Of course, why didn’t I think of that?
I’m not Jewish by birth, but I was raised Jewish by my “adoptive family” — a rag-tag group of old friends, mentors, family friends that I met in NYC during my college days who I’ve been celebrating the Jewish holidays with often.
This often confuses people, because I’m not Jewish.
However, I was delighted to move to Florida this year. I settled near a lovely reform temple! I’ve been going to temple for classes every week (Talmud and Maimonidies), to Friday night and Saturday morning services, and have volunteered at the temple while I can.
People have asked if I’m converting. But I like to keep good things under wraps. Perhaps if you see me use a Hebrew name anytime in the next few months to a year, then maybe your hunch will have been right?
While my rabbi said “nu nu!” about getting a Christmas tree in the house, I have a menorah on the way… which hopefully will arrive today or tomorrow. It’s strange not to have a Christmas tree, but I’ll live.
I grew up in a mostly non-religious household, but Christmas has always had a special place in my heart. Not Jesus, I think I just like the Christmas lights! Honestly! Sometimes I keep the decorations up all year (anyone remember my Israel flag tree from last year?)
I’m headed out to celebrate Hanukkah with some of my loved ones. I hope everyone else can find some peace today, whether you’re spending time alone, with friends, or with family.
I’m taking a few days off writing to decompress, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday.
With a nod to mental health, I want to note that if you’re sober, please resist temptation this week, and if you need it, call your sponsor. There are also online hotlines for that. If you’re not feeling great mentally, please reach out to a crisis hotline or trusted friend. You don’t have to struggle alone!
I love you all and wish you all the best! 💙
