This year I moved to Florida on a lark, joined the local temple, started studying Torah seriously, started writing again — both on Substack, and for Liberty Affair —tended to my plant babies, read over 80 books on biohacking & longevity, re-read Atlas Shrugged, got attacked by a flamingo on my patio and, as of last night: even hurt my funny bone.
There is joy in respite from monotony. I crave it like an adrenaline junky, devouring books by the Huberman, Attia, Sinclair, and Blackburn longevity crowd because that’s what really gets my gears turning now. Bryan Johnson has been a huge influence on how I operate recently too, nay to his detractors.
Hungry? I try to optimize for protein, and healthy fats in my grocery shopping. Maybe one day I’ll experiment with rapamycin…. but metformin for longevity has a great deal of clinical data to back it, has little side effects, and is less than a cup of Starbucks coffee. I like that option better.
Speaking of longevity: while I only have a handful of subscribers compared to most accounts, but the rate at which I’m gaining subscribers is increasing every week. So I’m looking forward to the next year here.
And I must admit: I’m actually fairly surprised at how good this is going.
I’m also happy to relay that I’m still recovered from anorexia, which I started struggling with when I was about 12 or 13. My heart is no longer in failure. I no longer weigh 83 pounds. I eat for nutrition and not weight loss now: but this holiday I’m loving the sufganiyot and latkes, of course.
Substack is very unforgiving. Many of you also have your own blogs and Substacks, and we all just want to be heard and understood. Joseph Massey, a Catholic poet on X inspired me to go “all-in” on Substack this year, and he’s been a great mentor.
There’s a lot of people I have to thank for helping make 2024 great. My “adoptive family,” my temple family, and many of the friends I’ve picked up along the way over the past few years.
That’s the magic of social media.
In the spirit of the holidays, here’s some people doing interesting things I’d like to give a shout-out to the following authors: Johanna Blythman,
… as well as a personal thanks to the Stolz family, Instapundit, Mind Matters, everyone I’ve met in temple this year, Kevin Trainor, Charlie Martin, Amy Alkon, A. Berman, R. Miller, S. Ellison, Sunny A, Jessica R, Michael Shapiro, R. Adams and the Adams family, N. Tedesco, C. Radomski, G. Watkins, S. Zegas, M. Schoeffler, Roy, Logan L, Elizabeth Rand of MACA, Monica D, Nathan W, Judith W, David I, Dan C, A Cohen, Daryl, Richard G, Bruce, D. Kane, Carrie B, and more….
Catch you on the flip side of 2024!
Were you testing us to see if we'd notice that you only gave a shout-out to one author?
I’m a doctor. If you manage to get rapamycin, don’t take it. This is an immunosuppressant that can cause a bunch of harm.
And I’m thrilled to hear about the anorexia being defeated!
